There are actually TWO chests on Fire Mountain's platform. I am going to replay Wind Waker soon, so I will check, but if someone else is able to check first, that would be fine. I think one requires that you shoot the cannons hanging on the side of the platform with the boomerang or bombs, and the other is either already there or requires the enemies to be killed. Interestingly, you can see the chests before they appear if you enlarge the mini-map (this only works in major squares of the Great Sea, which Fire Mountain is classed under).
