Old Woman

Appearances

The Legend of Zelda

In The Legend of Zelda, the Old Woman near the waterfall of the Death Mountain area simply states "Pay me and I'll talk". Only by giving her the middle amount of Rupees requested will she offer useful information. Otherwise, Link loses Rupees to hear: "That's not enough to talk" or "Boy, you're rich." Moreover, by paying her the right amount of money in the section near the Lost Woods, she will reveal to Link the directions he must take in order to get through the woods and onto the Graveyard.

Link can receive a Letter from the Old Man in a northeast cave of Hyrule. The Old Man tells Link to show the Letter to the Old Woman. After Link shows the Letter to the Old Woman, the various other Old Women around the Overworld will sell him Life Potions and 2nd Potions.

The Adventure of Link

Old Women that restore magic are found in nearly every town in The Adventure of Link. They are recognized by their orange dresses and offer Link to rest in their houses.

Two Old Women, one in Harbor Town of Mido, who claims to need Water of Life for her sick daughter, and one in Mountain Town of Darunia, who has a Kidnapped Child, allow Link to meet the Wise Men teaching spells in their house if the young hero helps them. An Old Woman in the Hidden Town of Kasuto invites Link inside her house to claim the fourth and last Magic Container if he has already three out of the four containers.

A Link to the Past

In A Link to the Past, an unnamed Old Woman resides in Sahasrahla's House. When Link heads out to Kakariko Village to search for Sahasrahla, he instead finds her there. The Old Woman informs Link that Sahasrahla is not home, and has not been seen ever since Agahnim began kidnapping the Maidens. She tells Link about the Hylia and the treasures they hid throughout Hyrule, including the Master Sword. She also tells Link to search around the village for someone who will know more about Sahasrahla's whereabouts. Later on, she compliments Link on his appearance and requests him to save Hyrule from Agahnim.

Her relation to Sahasrahla is never stated. At the end of the game, she is seen welcoming him home along with a friend of his.

A Link Between Worlds

In A Link Between Worlds, an unnamed Housekeeper resides in Sahasrahla's House, similarly to the Old Woman in A Link to the Past. Her relation to Sahasrahla is never stated, but she is the one who raised Sahasrahla's apprentice Osfala. She deeply wants Osfala's attention but never receives it. She tells Link that when Osfala made her a robe one time, she thought he might have meant something, but nothing ever became of it. After Osfala leaves for the Eastern Palace, the Housekeeper wonders where he might have went, though she guesses that he is trying to be a hero for Princess Zelda. She admits that she had once hoped that Osfala would be her hero.

Her Lorulean counterpart is the Masked Granny.

The Shadow Prince

The Old Woman is a character featured in The Shadow Prince. Link can only meet her if he opens the gates of the Water Town of Saria using the key given to him by an Old Man on his way to Ruto Town. Once the young hero enters the town square of Saria, the Old Woman will waddle towards him, asking if he is Link. Link confirms this, and just then he notices that the Old Woman has eyes "clear as glass." When Link remarks about her eyes, the Old Woman rewards his observation by advising him to retrieve the fruit of an apple tree located in the middle of the square. Doing so, she says, will make Link's eyes as clear as hers. After reaching the tree in the Wiseapple Farm, Link notices a small mirror with a thin wooden frame in one of the brances, realizing that the Old Woman was actually referring to the Mirror of Truth.

A Link to the Past (Ishinomori)

In the A Link to the Past comic by Shotaro Ishinomori, the Old Woman is referred to specifically as Sahasrahla's Wife. She is left under the care of his friends since the old man has departed for the Eastern Palace. He meets her when first visiting the village and learns about his depart from the town. When Link tells her that he is looking for the Master Sword, the old woman tells him the legend of the sacred blade, of its creation, and its location.

When Link is about to head to the Desert of Mystery, Link returns to Sahasrahla's House where his wife warns Link that traveling through the desert will not be easy since the "fierce winds and shifting sand" have bested even the most capable adventurers, which leads Link to use a glider found by Sahasrahla's friend instead. Sahasrahla's wife is last seen in Chapter 5, where she helps build a giant air balloon for Link so that he will be able to land atop Hyrule Castle and confront Agahnim.
