Modar is a character in Breath of the Wild.[3]

Biography[]

Modar is a Goron who resides at the Tanagar Canyon Course in Tanagar Canyon. He wears a Helmet on his head, and he carries a Mallet. Modar operates the Boom Bam Golf Mini-Game. He invented the Mini-Game after rolling down a hill, making him the only person to play it.[4] Despite this, he claims that it is famous and anyone who plays it is unable to get enough.[5]

When Link first speaks to Modar, he is surprised to see a Hylian and reasons that he must be tough.[6] Due to this, he asks Link if he is interested in trying out Boom Bam Golf.[7] If Link refuses to play Boom Bam Golf at any time, Modar will be disappointed, but he welcomes Link to come back in the future.[8] If Link asks what it is, Modar is shocked that he has never heard of it.[5] However, after explaining that he only invented it a few days ago, Modar realizes that it makes sense for Link to be unfamiliar with it.[4] He explains that the goal is to hit the Ball into the hole at the end of the Tanagar Canyon Course, which is marked by a Big Flag.[9] Link will score higher the fewer tries it takes him to achieve this, and it costs 20 Rupees to participate.[10]

To send the Ball a great distance, Modar suggests using two-handed Weapons, such as Hammers.[11] To move the Ball a short distance, Modar says to use one-handed Weapons, but he must be careful not to break them.[12] If the Ball is knocked off the Tanagar Canyon Course, Modar will inflict a one-stroke penalty from Link, and it will be returned to its previous location.[13] Modar will keep track of Link's strokes, but he must hit the Ball into the hole in less than 20.[14] He tells Link that the further he can hit the Ball along the Course, the better it will be for his score.[15] Finally, Modar explains that any movement from the Ball counts as a stroke, at which point he realizes that the rules are not as simple as he thought.[16] He then asks Link if he will play Boom Bam Golf.[17]

If Link agrees to play Boom Bam Golf, Modar will be excited.[18] Before they can start, he asks Link to pay the fee of 20 Rupees.[19] Once Link does so, Modar will take a moment to set up the Mini-Game.[20] After this, the Mini-Game will begin.

When Link speaks to Modar during the Mini-Game, he assumes that he wants to stop playing.[21] If Link refuses to give up, Modar states that Boom Bam Golfers never say die.[22] Similarly, if Link leaves the Tanagar Canyon Course, Modar calls out and warns him that the game will end if he goes any further.[23] Should Link ignore this and continue to leave the Course, Modar will disqualify him, telling him that he should have said something if he wanted to stop playing.[24]

If Link does not reach the goal in 20 strokes, Modar will cut him off.[25] He is saddened to see someone accumulate 20 strokes, especially since he was rooting for Link.[26] After Link completes a round, Modar will bring him back to the beginning of the Tanagar Canyon Course to tally his score. If it took Link 11 or more strokes to reach the goal, Modar will be disappointed, saying that Boom Bam Golf is not that hard.[27] He tells Link not to give up and encourages him to keep practicing.[28]

If Link hits the Ball into the goal in six to 10 strokes, Modar states his belief that he can do better.[29] He assures Link that it takes time to become good at something, and he gives him a Red Rupee as a reward.[30] If Link reaches the goal in four to five shots, Modar remarks that he is becoming a heavyweight.[31] He tells Link to keep trying to set the Boom Bam Golf record, giving him a Purple Rupee as a reward.[32] Finally, if Link reaches the goal in three or less strokes, Modar will be impressed, saying he could be a professional if there were Boom Bam Golf leagues.[33] While he cannot recall his exact score, Modar believes it was close to Link's.[34] He thinks that Link is the type of player who could make Boom Bam Golf popular, and he encourages him to keep playing.[35] He gives Link a Silver Rupee as a reward.

After giving Link his reward, Modar believes thinks that Link looks like he wants to play Boom Bam Golf again.[36] If Link refuses, Modar will be disappointed, but he is pleased that Link was able to see the majesty of the Mini-Game for himself.[37]
