Importing from Fandom[]

Hello, I've seen recently that you've been importing information from Fandom. The idea of what you're doing is great, but please be careful. Instead of just copy and pasting from the Fandom onto everything we already have, take the information and reword it to work it in to everything that is already there. There were lots of errors I've seen with some Templates you pasted over, like the "Infobox item" Template which the Zelda Wiki doesn't use. Please take more caution when editing pages and try to add things in your own words. Thanks - 𝐌𝐚𝐠𝐢𝐜𝐦𝐚𝐬𝐨𝐧𝟏𝟎𝟎𝟎 (𝐭𝐚𝐥𝐤) 10:56, 29 October 2019 (UTC)

Plagiarism[]

Hey Kenjiillumni, I just want to let you know that you're receiving a temporary (one day) ban for repeated accounts of plagiarism after being asked not to on two occasions. Though Zeldapedia and Zelda Wiki are both hosted under the same entity, plagiarism is a serious offense that we cannot ignore. Because of that, if there are any more cases of plagiarism we will be forced to issue longer ban sentences.
I realize that this is probably frustrating to see, but here's what can be done instead of copying articles directly:

  • Write content from scratch that only draws general inspiration from Zeldapedia articles.
    • As I already explained on MannedTooth's talk page, Zelda Wiki and Zeldapedia follow distinct and largely incompatible editing standards. You can find Zelda Wiki's guidelines here, which should explain everything that you need to know to get started. Specifically, our articles guideline outlines what you should cover for each article type (such as items or characters).
    • Be sure to read over our getting started guideline in particular, as it explains the basics of what go into our articles. Those will probably help you see what is different between the two Wikis.
    • You can check out the edits here and here for how an article should look like according to our standards in contrast to Zeldapedia's.

We're very happy that you want to help out, but we cannot accept that help in the form of plagiarism. There are going to be differences in how Zeldapedia approached articles and how Zelda Wiki approaches them, so we understand if it is going to take some time to adapt. If you have any questions or you need help with editing, don't be afraid to join our Discord server and ask around. There's usually someone online at any time who can help you. Thanks. Give me one good reason why we are legally not allowed to plagarize information freely uploaded by varying users from one site to another which also freely hosts information generously donated (for free) by other users -- especially when the parent companies of both sides forcibly shut down one of them. friendly reminder TriforceTony -- both Gamepedia and Fandom operate under the Creative Commons license: https://www.fandom.com/licensing#Using_Wikia_content Кэне_零三 11:59, 15 January 2020 (UTC)
Hey there, first of all, I'd like to thank you for wanting to contribute on Zelda Wiki. I would strongly encourage you to join the Zelda Wiki Discord Server so that we can discuss this topic more thoroughly, but here's some reasons as to why you should not plagiarize content from Zeldapedia directly to Zelda Wiki:
  • As you pointed out, most wikis on Fandom (and Gamepedia) operates under a Creative Commons license, however, this is not the case for Zelda Wiki. The wiki initially was created independently of Gamepedia using a GNU license (as you can see by scrolling down to the very bottom of any page). I'm not an expert in licenses in the slightest, but I've been told it's technically not "legal" to move content under a CC license to a GNU license.
  • Even though the licenses would be compatible, Zelda Wiki operates very differently than how Zeldapedia does: we do not have the same quality standards, policies and we're much more strict on what goes in articles. By copying a whole page's information directly from Zeldapedia to Zelda Wiki, you are contributing to the divergence of articles' standards and structures.
On another note, I'd like to address how you are using words like "forcibly" to describe the merge that happened between Zeldapedia and Zelda Wiki. I'm not sure as to why so many people are misinformed about this topic, but Zeldapedia willingly merged with Zelda Wiki following Zelda Wiki's proposal (which I personally initiated). Seeing how their wiki was falling short of quality compared to Zelda Wiki and its high standards, and their general tendency to move more towards a community than a wiki, the staff held a vote and the community decided to merge with Zelda Wiki.
IF you wish, you could join the Discord Server and have a talk with us about both topics, but please be respectful about what staff ask of you and try to not spread false information about how the merge really went down. Please inform yourself first. Thanks and I wish we'll see you around (and on Discord)! :) MannedTooth (talk) 12:24, 15 January 2020 (UTC)
