Etymology Editing[]

Hey Ciela! The Zelda Wiki staff really appreciates your willingness to improve our etymology sections. However, we would like to kind of steer you in the right direction. We would prefer you use more reputable and known sources, such as https://www.behindthename.com/ when citing information about character names. As long as a page on there isn't a poorly done user created page, you should be able to find some good information on there. We would really prefer you used primary sources ( such as this page https://www.behindthename.com/name/john ). If you have any further questions, feel free to message Tony, our wiki director. You can post on his user page ( https://zelda.gamepedia.com/User:TriforceTony ) or email him at tony@zeldauniverse.net. And don't be afraid to send an application to join our staff, we need all the help we can get =) Hylian pi (talk) 22:19, 17 March 2017 (UTC)

Hey, could you make sure when you're editing etymology you put the {{Names part of the table down with the table? I often see your edits with it stuck to the end of your sentences. Should look more like this:

Etymology[]

Zora means "aurora" and "dawn".

{{Names

|enBr=
|enBrM=

Regarding etymology contributions[]

Hello. Regarding the name origin trivia you have been adding to the Etymology sections, we have given it some thought, and we would like to ask you to stop adding these to those sections.

Although while you have provided sources into the meanings you have added, the majority of these meanings are overly specific and are unlikely to have been the inspiration for such characters. Some etymologies that are clearly obvious (Such as 'Silva' from Skyward Sword being a derivative of silver, which is supported by the other Mogmas also being named after minerals) are fine to add. But adding overly specific and sometimes obscure etymologies from various languages to a random character (Such as Faroese and Greek meanings with Roperi) is not, as it is extremely unlikely that a character would have been named with that in mind.

The majority of Zelda character names are usually derived from the Japanese name or a translation of it. Very often character names are puns or word plays. Given that the Zelda series is a Japanese game series, it would be fine to add Japanese name meanings, and it would not be entirely random. However, this should preferably be done sparsely.

In the end, however, name meanings should generally only be added if they have been confirmed by Nintendo, such as the case with Link and Navi. In which case, if Nintendo confirms a name meaning, it should be the only meaning in that section. Otherwise, all proposed name meanings should not be treated as fact.

Thanks. - Midoro (talk) 15:57, 9 April 2017 (UTC)

Hello Midoro :-) I'm sorry about all the etymology issues. I wanted to expand such sections, but didn't realize the trouble I was causing. Not being able to find a page that explains how to edit them specifically, I've been going by what other editors have done and from what I've been told. Thank you for notifying me of this, but I would appreciate it if you would please answer some questions of mine, since you are an administrator. I'd like to make sure I understand, so further errors may be avoided. If you can't, please let me know and direct me to someone who can.

1. If a name meaning is close with the character's game, personality, appearance, or situation, is it okay to add? Like with Mako from the Wind Waker, would it be alright to state that he could be named after the Mako Shark, since Wind Waker is an ocean themed game? If a character was beautiful and their name meant beautiful, or had something to do with beauty, is that okay to add?

2. Can the name origination and meaning only be placed if it is Japanese, or is it fine to use if the meaning is English? Bella from Freshly-Picked Tingle's Rosy Rupeeland's name means beautiful in Italian, which fits since she is a beautiful woman. Did you mean that languages such as Faroese shouldn't be used because none of the games are made in that language? Is it alright to use the meanings if it is Japanese, English, Spanish, etc., because those are widely used and universal, along with the fact games from the Zelda series have been translated into them? Does Latin count in this, since it is used in most words and speech?

3. I noticed you didn't delete the Roperi name meaning. I now see how it is not necessary to the page now. I've kept a list of the names I've edited, so if you wish I could go and delete those that are similar to Roperi's. If there are any particular ones that should be gone, please let me know.

Thanks to you and the staff for holding me accountable. I'm still trying to get the flow of how things are done here, so thanks for not leaving me hanging.

1. Mako can come from many different things, though. But given that, yes, TWW is an ocean-based game, I don't necessarily see a problem with Mako Shark. However, I would please ask that whenever you do add a name meaning to the etymology section that has not been confirmed, you state it as a possibility. Such as "Mako's name may be derived from the Mako Shark". This helps create a distinction that the name's meaning is not official and only just a guessed possibility. They should never be stated as factual unless confirmed.
2. What I just mean with using languages like Faroese and Greek and such is that some of the proposed name meanings seem... a bit of a long stretch. In all likelihood, Roperi is probably a derivative of a Japanese name or word, or possibly a romanization of a English word, or otherwise just something Himekawa made up. I wouldn't know exactly since I do not have a firm grasp on Japanese. But it is extremely unlikely, and a far cry, to suggest that Roperi could possibly be a combination of two distinct languages (Faroese and Greek in this case). It's rather unheard of.
The names and what would be acceptable name meanings are kind of case-by-case, honestly. But Bella being an Italian name is perfectly reasonable though, and it is likely that the writers did just pick that name as something suitable.
3. Roperi's propsed name meaning is still not acceptable. I just have not gotten through our patrol log, nor have anyone else. But if you want to remove Roperi's name meaning, go ahead. Midoro (talk) 16:14, 13 April 2017 (UTC)

Thanks again Midoro. I'll keep this all in mind. I'll go and fix Roperi, but I'll have to come back on later to repair others. I can do more than Etymology sections, I just wanted to expand them more. Thanks for the patient yet stern advice, this makes a lot of sense. Please let me know if anything else happens, I wish to become more fluent in proper editing and etiquette.

Manga image source[]

Hi, I was wondering where you got the image from the OoT Mange of the Skull Kid and the Baga Tree? I've recently re-uploaded the image as a png here and for now, I've credited you as the Original Source as I believe you most likely were the one who took the picture. If you did take the picture, then the file is fine as is but if you got the image from somewhere else, can you please update the source? User:Link Lab/sig 17:46, 22 May 2017 (UTC)

Hello Link Lab :-) Yes, I took the Baga Tree's photo myself. Thank you for fixing the file for me, this was my first time uploading an image. Since all my manga images are taken by me, should I name the files as .png from now on? Thank you.

- Ciela04 (talk) 02:11, 23 May 2017 (UTC)

On the wiki, we would prefer a .png file but you don't have to upload everything as a .png. Bear in mind that you can't just rename a file to make it a .png. If your camera takes .jpg files, you would have to convert the files to .png using an image editor. Typically, the .png is a much bigger file so it may not be possible to upload it at the same resolution you took the photo. I actually had to find a better image compressor to even get the baga tree image uploaded as the .png was way over the 8MB file size limit.
As a word of caution though, I would recommend that you find a way to either stop your camera from adding metadata to your files or to remove the metadata from your files before you upload. Your last image had very detailed GPS information attached to the file. User:Link Lab/sig 16:44, 24 May 2017 (UTC)
I apologize for answering so late. Thank you for notifying me of this, Link Lab! I am currently unable to fix my camera to stop doing such a thing, so I will be unable to download images for the time being. Thank you for your advice, I'll keep it in mind if this is ever resolved.

Question About Manhandla in OoS Manga[]

Hey, I was wondering if you knew anything about Manhandla's appearance in the OoS manga by Himekawa? It is listed under the category for characters in the manga on the Manhandla page, so the page needs a section, but I don't know anything about its appearance. Does it talk, thus making it a character, or does Link just fight it? If it does talk, what does it say? Would appreciate the help very very much. Hylian pi (talk) 05:48, 10 November 2017 (UTC)

Manhandla does not speak, it's simply fought by Link, Ricky, and Piyoko :-) I can add the section if you like. - Ciela04 (talk) 23:47, 10 November 2017 (UTC)

Yeah, a brief section about its appearance would be great! Also, just a heads up, I had split Manhandla and Manhandla (Boss), because we started categorizing bosses in the first zelda game who are just randomly found in the middle of Dungeons as just regular enemies, forcing us to make both an enemy page AND a boss page, BUT, due to a recent discovery that they are just categorized as Bosses in Arts & Artifacts, I am currently in the process of merging the pages back together. I'm going to try to merge them tonight though, so that it is hopefully done by the time you go to add the section. Thanks so much! Hylian pi (talk) 03:59, 11 November 2017 (UTC)

No problem! If it helps, I'll wait until Manhandla is merged to avoid any edits conflicts. - Ciela04 (talk) 04:51, 11 November 2017 (UTC)

Manhandla is already merged so go ahead whenever you like, again thanks. Hylian pi (talk) 05:30, 11 November 2017 (UTC)
