Entrance to the Temple
The dungeon is located on Mercay Island. It can be accessed anytime through a forest area from the north of the island's harbor.
The temple is a recurring stage, as it's explored at least five times throughout the game, each time allowing further exploration. After the first temple is complete, Link obtains the Phantom Hourglass on the first floor, allowing him to spend time in the temple without taking damage. With the exception of the third and the final journey, each of Link's expeditions through the temple are in search of Sea Charts; on the penultimate journey it is possible (and advisable) to collect two Sea Charts on the same trip. The only enemies within the temple are the various Phantoms, the Phantom Eyes, which alert the Phantoms to Link and impede his movement, Wizzrobes, which steal some of Link's Sand of Hours if they hit him, and two rooms full of minor enemies on floor B5. There are a total of thirteen basement floors in the temple in addition to the ground floor.
Each time Link exits the temple, the puzzles reset. However, gaining new items also opens up new paths through the temple, allowing Link to find new treasures or shortcuts.
After the Ghost Ship is beaten, Oshus reveals that he is actually the Ocean King himself. He was sealed by Bellum, but created the alter ego of Oshus. The Ocean King explains that Bellum dwells on the final floor of the temple, absorbing more and more Life Force.
After the hero receives the Phantom Sword, he may participate in a time trial within the dungeon. At the end, he is awarded with two ship parts, the rarity of which is determined by how much time is remaining. Because of the many golden pots scattered across the dungeon (which, when broken, give Link more time), as well as the time received after defeating Wizzrobes, it is possible to reach the final room with a net time of 0:00.
Minor Traps and Enemies
- In Spirit Tracks, a location called the Lost at Sea Station can be unlocked and explored. Inside, Link can talk to a Gossip Stone who, in exchange for his sword and bow, will allow him to navigate a "legendary temple in a distant kingdom," referencing the Temple of the Ocean King and containing many similar elements.
- "This temple is a replica of a legendary temple in a distant kingdom. Many treasures are hidden within. And to protect these treasures are many Phantoms." — Gossip Stone (Spirit Tracks)
