Lanayru Gorge is an area in Skyward Sword located in Lanayru Province just outside the Lanayru Caves. Lanayru Gorge is home to Lanayru, the Thunder Dragon. Like every area of Lanayru Desert, it is a barren wasteland in the present, but in the past it is full of life.

A report, master.

Lanayru Gorge

This is Lanayru Gorge. Of all the Timeshift Stone mining areas here, this was the very first to be mined.

Location and Overview

Lanayru Gorge is one of the three areas that Link is required to visit in order to learn parts of the "Song of the Hero". It becomes accessible after Golo, the Goron miner, finally completes his mining expedition. Link manages to find the location of the Thunder Dragon, Lanayru, but in the present he has passed away, leaving only behind his skeletal remains. The young hero must transport a Timeshift Stone in a minecart through the mine and deliver it safely to the Thunder Dragon. Upon reaching its destination, the main part Lanayru Gorge is restored to its former glory and the Thunder Dragon can be found still alive, although sick.

Lanayru is seriously ill in this time, and the Ancient Robots, in an attempt to cure him, planted a Tree of Life seedling here, hoping to use the powerful healing properties of its Fruit.[1][2][3] Despite all of their efforts to make the tree grow, the seedling cannot flourish in the Lanayru Province.[4] Link manages to find a more suitable location in the Sealed Grounds of the past for the Tree of Life to grow and is able to bring the fruit to Lanayru to cure what ails him.[5][6][7] After being healed, Lanayru teaches the hero his part of the "Song of The Hero". The dragon also subsequently opens up a minigame called the Thunder Dragon's Lightning Round.

  1. "Cough...cough... Oh, hello... I haven't had a visitor like you here in...quite a while. You're a human, aren't you? You must have some reason for coming this far. What is it? ... I see, I see. So you're Link from the sky... Cough... That's not much of a name, is it? How about I add a model number to your name like my friends have got? How about LD-Link-16...? Oh. I can tell you don't like the sound of that. That's a shame... Cough...cough... So, what can I do for you? Ohh... You say you need me to teach you a song? Cough..." — Lanayru (Skyward Sword)
  2. "Hold on, now. Didn't you just say you came from the sky, Link? So then you're the hero chosen by the goddess, aren't you? I see... Well, that is something... Although I must apologize. You see, I can't really help you. I may have enough strength for a brief chat like this, but... Well, as you can see, I am quite ill. Cough... I'm in no shape to sing. And to think it was the goddess herself who entrusted me with this important duty... I feel the deepest shame... Cough..." — Lanayru (Skyward Sword)
  3. "We wanted Master Thunder Dragon to get well, so we planted a seedling from the Tree of Life, which bears a fruit that is said to cure any illness, vrrm." — Ancient Robot (Skyward Sword)
  4. "This area is only good for growing grass and flowers, zrrt. If we can't find a way to grow the seedling quickly... Our master will not make it, bzzt..." — Ancient Robot (Skyward Sword)
  5. "What are you doing with that seedling, vrrm?! Master Thunder Dragon needs fruit from the Tree of Life to recover! Unless you mean to help our master, bzzzzt? Really, vrrm?! Thank you, zrrt! Make sure you plant the seedling somewhere it will be sure to thrive, phoo-weep. I fear growing the seedling to maturity in Lanayru Province is impossible, brrzrrt. We're counting on you, vweep!" — Ancient Robot (Skyward Sword)
  6. "Well, since you uprooted it, it's your responsibility now, vrrm! Make sure you plant that seedling where it can grow to maturity, phoo-weep. And that means taking it somewhere outside of the Lanayru area, bzzt! We're all counting on you, vweep!" — Ancient Robot (Skyward Sword)
  7. "I don't think there's any way that seedling would ever mature if you planted it in the Lanayru area, vrrm... We need your help, brrzrrt! Master Thunder Dragon needs the fruit from the Tree of Life to regain his strength!" — Ancient Robot (Skyward Sword)
