Gruve is a character in Breath of the Wild.[2]

Biography[]

Gruve is a member of the Zora tribe who was employed by Sidon in his search for a Hylian warrior.[3][4] However, during his search, Gruve neglected his duties and fell asleep on the spot where the Lanayru Tower was buried.[4] When Link activated the Great Plateau Tower, the Lanayru Tower rose in unison with it, causing Gruve to be carried to the top of the Lanayru Tower.[5]

If Link speaks to Gruve atop the Lanayru Tower, he explains that he is too high up to make it down safely.[6] He points Link toward Inogo Bridge, saying that while Prince Sidon is there, he has not been able to get his attention.[7] Having found a Hylian,[8] Gruve will call down to Sidon.[9] Unfortunately, Sidon is unable to hear him.[10]

Gruve weighs the option of jumping down into the waters surrounding the Lanayru Tower, believing that Sidon must be worried about him.[11] He decides that such an attempt would be fatal and gives up on it.[12] Gruve apologizes to Link, saying he must go on ahead without him.[13] Speaking to Gruve again will lead him to accuse Link of trying to push him off of the Sheikah Tower,[14] but he dismisses the idea. [15] Gruve hopes to find a way to get Sidon to hear his cries for help.[16]

After Link speaks to Sidon for the first time, Gruve will return to Zora's Domain and stand over the waterfall to the northwest of the Goddess Statue, peering down into the water below. If Link speaks to him after previously meeting him atop the Lanayru Tower, Gruve will reintroduce himself and explain that he managed to jump from the Sheikah Tower and into the Zora River.[17] If Link did not speak to Gruve prior to meeting to Sidon, Gruve will then explains that he previously worked for Sidon trying to find a Hylian,[18] but it is lucky that Link found Sidon on his own.[19] He then relays his plight atop the Sheikah Tower to him.[20]

In either event, Gruve will explain that he saw his reflection during his jump from the Tower and later developed a philosophy that a person is at their most beautiful when diving into water.[21] Gruve will then invite Link to return to him to show his beautiful diving form after he has learned to ascend waterfalls.[22] If pressed further, Gruve will explain that when equipped with Zora Armor, Hylians are capable of climbing waterfalls much like a Zora,[23] and that the Zora Armor made by Zora princesses are far superior.[24]

Gruve will also explain that his favorite diving spot is Shatterback Point, though the Lynel patrolling Ploymus Mountain makes it a dangerous trip.[25] Laflat considers him to be a fool for this, as his words encourage others to follow his actions.[26]

Upon receiving the Zora Armor from King Dorephan, Gruve asks Link to dive down the waterfall.[27] This initiates the "Diving is Beauty!" Side Quest. If Link jumps from the waterfall, Gruve will exclaim in excitement before asking Link to return by means of the waterfall.[28] If Link returns without climbing the waterfall, Gruve will reassert his desire to see him ascend via the waterfall.[29] After successfully fulfilling Gruve's request, Gruve will give Link five Fleet-Lotus Seeds as a reward.[30][31] If Link's inventory space for Fleet-Lotus Seeds is full, Gruve will tell him to return when he has space for them.[32] Bidding goodbye, Gruve will inform Link that he hopes to see his next dive.[33]
