Candles are items appearing in The Legend of Zelda and The Adventure of Link. They are usually used to light up dark areas, such as a dungeon room or a cave. Some later titles have replaced the Candle with the Lantern.

The Legend of Zelda

The Legend of Zelda features a Blue Candle and the upgraded Red Candle. In both quests, the former can be purchased in several overworld shops for 60 Rupees. The latter is found in Level-7.

When used, they shoot a fire ball a few tiles ahead of Link, which will remain for a few seconds before disappearing. Although the flame's main function is to light up dark rooms in certain dungeons,[1] it will also slightly damage anything that walks into it, including Link himself. The Candle's flame can also burn down certain bushes in the overworld to reveal hidden staircases, including those leading to Level-8 in the First Quest, and Level-7 in the Second Quest.

The Blue Candle is capable of only producing one flame per screen. The Red Candle can produce unlimited flames.[2] Once the Red Candle is obtained, the Blue Candle will be thrown away from Link's equipment if he has one, and he will be unable to purchase it.

The Adventure of Link

In The Adventure of Link, the Candle can be found in the Parapa Palace[3] after defeating an Iron Knuckle. It lights up otherwise pitch-black caves and allows Link to see any enemies who may dwell within.[4] The Candle is an optional item. However, it is more difficult to navigate dark caves without it.

Other Appearances

The Legend of Zelda Comic

The Blue Candle is briefly featured in The Legend of Zelda comic. In The Power, Zelda uses the Blue Candle in Ganon's lair while preparing to retrieve the Trophy from the Underworld.

Zelda's Adventure

In Zelda's Adventure, Candles can be purchased from several merchants around Tolemac for 100 Rupees. They are used to light up dark rooms inside of dungeons, but can only be used once per Candle. As there are not very many dark rooms, the Candle sees little use.

Hyrule Warriors

In Hyrule Warriors' Master Quest DLC Pack, the 8-Bit Red Candle from The Legend of Zelda appears as a weapon for Link. It is statistically-identical to and part of the Magic Rod weapon category.

A Candle Item Card also appears in Adventure Mode, and is used to burn away bushes on the Adventure Map.
